AstraZeneca has launched the world’s first generic blockbuster, which will be available for sale on the NHS in five years’ time, in a bid to provide relief for the millions of people living with heart attacks, stroke and other chronic diseases.
The drugmaker’s annual UK sales will go up to £2.5bn over the course of five years, with sales reaching £11.9bn this year. The global market is expected to be worth £4.5bn by year’s end.
The launch of the drug was announced by AstraZeneca and is the result of a series of discussions with pharmaceutical companies. The company had previously been given exclusive rights to sell the drug in the UK in a deal worth around £1.3bn.

“Patients are also now eligible to buy the generic version of Pfizer’s blockbuster antidepressant, Prozac, which is due to hit the market in the UK in the fourth quarter of this year. Prozac is the only drug approved by the European Medicines Agency to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder in adults.
“We are confident that the launch of this new drug will provide patients with effective relief from the debilitating symptoms of their heart disease, including heart attack and stroke.”
The global pharmaceutical industry has faced numerous issues over the last couple of years, including the failure of the UK’s National Health Service to provide medicines to eligible patients. The pharmaceutical industry’s inability to fully address the growing number of patients with chronic heart diseases is due to the ongoing challenges faced by the NHS.

The Philippines Department of Trade and Industry said Monday that it has launched an effort to identify and eliminate generic drugs that were being manufactured by the country’s top drug maker, Pfizer Inc.
